MITCHELVILLE HOW IT HAPPENED

In toady’s Island Packet there was a story of Mitchelville and how it came to be.  It was established in 1862, before the Emancipation Proclamation and a year after Union ships drove Confederate troops from Hilton Head.  It goes on to say how barracks were initially set up for “contraband” slaves left behind Union lines. And that the slave were given land to build homes, govern and educate themselves before being granted citizenship.  This area was along Beach City Road.  The Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Leadership Class of 2012 hopes to make the story of Mitchelville a life long legacy on Hilton Head by creating outdoor exhibits about the culture and history of Mitchelville.  If you would like to read this interesting article about our area, go to www.islandpacket.com under “NEWS” and on the left side of the page, click on “Leadership Class Hopes to Preserve Mitchelville Legacy.
